I "usually" get to see flocks of sandhill cranes at least ONCE a year,,,,,Sometimes I get to see them TWICE a year! But when I see them, they are always in flight!
This morning I was driving home from taking my daughter to school and I saw in the air these large flocks of birds. When I got up to where they were, I looked around and saw there were large flocks on the ground! We have some very remote areas close to our house,,,,,,open fields, pecan groves, woods,,,,,,,,In one particular area, there were HUNDREDS of these birds,,,,,,I am 99% sure they were sandhill cranes. I could just KICK myself, I should have drove home and got my camera and drove back out to where the birds were!!!!!!!! This might have been a "once in a lifetime" event for me!!!and I MISSED IT!
I had to go back into town around lunchtime so I did take my camera with me this time!!! There was one area in particular where it looked like there were a few cranes in the distance,,,,,,,,,I havent looked at the video yet to see if I got a good shot or not!??!
We were talking about it at work,,,,,,I got it wrong at work, I was calling them whooping cranes, I should know better than that! Whooping cranes are all white! These cranes were gray,,,,,,,We talked about how alot of people will see them and hear them in flight and they think they are Canada Geese,,,,,,,Sandhill Cranes are alot bigger and their call is "different" from geese.
One of my most FAVORITE Websites is eNature.com. Click here and you can see pics of Sandhill Cranes AND you can hear their call!!!!
